Army dismisses gay Arabic linguist

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - A decorated sergeant and Arabic language specialist was dismissed from the U.S. Army under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, though he says he never told his superiors he was gay and his accuser was never identified.

...

On Dec. 2, investigators formally interviewed Copas and asked if he understood the military's policy on homosexuals, if he had any close acquaintances who were gay, and if he was involved in community theater. He answered affirmatively.

Asked if he was involved in community theater???

Okay, I'm confused. What does community theater have to do with any of this?

What does community theater have to do with any of this?

It's a stereotype, admittedly, but one with a lot of validity: from my experience with "that crowd" in college (I only did one production but had many "acquaintances" too), about one in five guys were homo- or bisexual.

I won't deny that it's still a very leading and arbitrary question, though, just the same as asking if he had "close acquaintances" as well.

Boy, it's a good thing we don't really need anyone who speaks Arabic in the military these days.

More proof from the DOD that "military intelligence" is an oxymoron.

Such a shame. We sure need that man's skills right about now, with the Middle east going to complete and utter shite . . .
