Cause every city needs a place where misspelling words is encouraged.

It's finally happening!: a safe, spiritual, community-building space for womyn is coming to Baltimore. If you're interested in being a part of creating or experiencing this kind of space, check out The Spiral Dance Womyn's Center and Bookstore The people I've met who are involved in the project have the kind of energy that just feels positive and nurturing for the soul. I wanted to pass this on since I can't be the only one who has wondered why a place like this didn't already exist in Baltimore.

Yes. Again with the spelling and word thing.

I have a theory that misspelling words on purpose just to make a point is hurtful to one's cause. So maybe spelling it "womyn" instead of "woman" gives you a momentary "so there" at Teh Eevul Patriarchy. But how does it lend any credibility and seriousness, other than people who would think that it's just a smashing idea anyway? I think there are far better ways to be taken seriously and work for equality. But hey...enjoy your Z Budapest and Marija Gimbutas. I'll be giving you a wide berth.

To be clear on that, yes, I think it's sheer idiocy. And reading over their website, this looks like the sort of place that would give me hives.

That's so fluffy it could make a whole store full of pillows. Gag.

Stop Y abuse, people! What did the letter Y ever do to you?

so, out of curiosity, is there a place in your area at which you'd rather i did a book signing? i have relatives in fredericksburg, so i probably need to do a booksigning around there somewhere (or i'll never hear the end of it)... i was thinking that place might work, but if there's somewhere better, i'm open to suggestions. because i like spelling things properly, really.

Hmm...trying to think. The only store that I can think of immediately in Baltimore, well, I've never known of them doing booksignings (doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've just never heard of it happening there.)

That's Grandma's Candles http://www.grandmascandleshop.com/ It's downtown, only a few blocks from the Harbor but not the most visible of places.

Well, actually...there's also Breath Books http://www.breathebooks.com/

There are of course, other places in other towns. I just don't know them nearly as well.

What sort of book is this?

Stuff like this has always annoyed me too. I don't mind if a cute little dog groomer place calls themselves "Snip Doggy Dog". I mean, it's kind of silly but funny enough, and at least it's spelled right. I do, however, take major offense to companies, businesses, etc, spelling things wrong (on purpose and sometimes by accident) and then plastering their disregard for grammar all over the place. As a teacher, it used to infuriate me when my students would see signs using apostrophes wrong and all of my work in class would be eradicated because of yet another dumb business owner who didn't bother to pay attention in English 101. And Womyn? That's just plain annoying. It doesn't make the word shorter or anything. It's not an abbreviation. Putting the E in there would take just as much effort and would result in just the same amount of clients.

ALTHOUGH. And here's a thought....Perhaps getting people like you and me all riled up about their "mistake" is generating talk about their event/company/etc, and any kind of publicity is good publicity?

i think it has to do with the whole "we are not men, we don't associate with men, we are womyn" blather. the only women i actually see using this spelling are feminazis/super butch penis-hating lesbians.

both groups are extremes, and frighten me somewhat.
