More Obama Commentary...

After a couple more days existing in Baltimore and overhearing more conversations about Obama, I have another thought...

While I understand the massive historical significance of electing a black man to office...

For pete's sake people, the pigment in his skin isn't what's going to get the job done.

Additionally, to the three or four people that I've overheard saying that he's "not black enough" and that we need someone with darker skin- the fact that his skin is a little lighter than yours isn't gonna hinder his ability to do the job.

Agreed. Color of skin isn't what's going to make anyone a good or bad leader.

Well, he's already been making almost half a dozen changes in his first couple of days. That's most of the buzz I've been hearing. He's shutting down Guantanamo, he's preventing Bush from trying to classify any information regarding what they had done, he's reversing Bush's Abortion Policy... he's been busy!

And it's all because of his skin color (or lack thereof!)

I think the point is that it took somebody very special to break the color barrier, and we're lucky he's in charge now instead of a half-wit pseudo-cowboy.

This is quite true, the guy clearly has a lot going on for him to get elected in the first place, and yeah, I know there was an additional extra something that made a certain contingent of the population willing to vote for OMG! A Black Man!

I didn't mean to imply that [livejournal.com profile] glitteringlynx thought that his had anything to do with his skin color- I know she doesn't. It was just a sarcastic remark in regards to the way some people are talking about this whole thing.

(And I'd like to think that whatever it was, these people were voting for Barrack Obama who happens to be a black man, not A Black Man...but there will always be people who will vote for someone because it's A Black Man or A White Woman or A Woman or A Man or A Protestant Christian or...whatever, and not for the actual individual)

lol

Well if ppl want to be that ignorant, we cna't really stop them, can we?

I see the election of a black president as an historic event separate from the election of Barack Obama, who is a very smart man.

Ugh, thank you! My mom keeps going on about how wonderful it is. I mean, Obama's great, but have some faith in his ideas, rather than keep going on how wonderful and historic an event this is! Shouldn't we be celebrating his policies and strides he's already making, rather than his skin pigmentation?

AH thankyou.

People have been so idealistic with Obama (yeah he's great, but he's a human being), and talking about how amazing it is that he is black.
...well so are alot of people!!

Ok, I have to say this and so help me may you be struck down if you try to argue...anyone:P I wish that everyone would just shut-up already about how horrible the white man (and woman) is to everyone and how this is such a break though for the African American community...(Rant time)

1. If your going to use African American than you had better damn well call me European Armenian not white, and not Caucasian. Or we can all just simplify it and call each other Americans.

2. I might be white but I can tell you right now that at some point in history be it by the Romans or by Wealthy Land owners in the early Americas my people where slaves as well. But do you see me talking dirty about every Italian I see?

3. And oh Gods help me this is truth and history so just deal. Africa had a long standing Slave trade before the Europeans started. Yet we don't talk about that do we? Just like we don't talk about how the Civil War was not started or fought over slavery. Yes, Lincoln brought it in as an issue to keep the south from getting European allies, but that was not the reason behind the war.

I am not saying that racism or slavery was ever right but you know people every damn race has had to deal with shit at one time or another. Hell I have been the victim of it because I am a white girl form the south, so I must be racist right. I have faith in Obama as a man..not a white or a black or any other color man, just a man. What we need is a woman in power but that time is soon coming, but for now Obama is where he needs to be. The public and the media can not let his race overshadow everything he will do.
