So back over the weekend, while going through some stuff, Gavin picked up my saxophone and pulled it out...I haven't played it since shortly after it was given to me a couple of years ago, partly because it's not really in very good shape, partly because it's an alto and dammit, I want a tenor.

I sucked on the reed a bit and gave it a shot to see how it sounded...a bit better than I remembered though it took me a few tries to get it sounding semi-decent, but it felt really good to play, even for a few minutes. I should find a music store and pick up a book and learn the fingering....

Add this to my list of things which I must make a more conscious effort to do more often....

Ted's Music on Centre St. between Charles and St. Paul will have what you need at a good price. They also do repairs on woodwinds.

Huh, I didn't even know there was a music store in that area. I was wondering if I might not have to go all the way out to Bill's.

This one at the very least needs new cork, but probably needs more than that.

I recently tried to play my alto again. I had trouble even getting a sound out of it. I probably need to start on the el-cheapo 2 1/2 reeds again. It's been 8 years or so. I'm sure mine needs re-corked and re-padded. Luckily, I saved all my beginner books, so I can do a refresher when I have time.

Yay, saxophone!

I took my saxophone in to get repaired recently with the idea that I would pick it back up...The guy at the music store says to me, "Please don't make me fix this." I was like, "Wow. That bad, huh?" He told me it would cost more to fix it than it would to buy a "nice, new, shiny one." Good luck!

Ah, bummer...

I don't think mine's really all that terrible, the main thing I immediately see is that it needs a new cork. It's not especially pretty though...lol...it was given to me by a friend of a former roommate who had it sitting in an attic for ages and didn't play, but didn't just want to junk it. I'm figuring it would be a good idea to have a shop take a look at it and see what they have to say.

I used to be able to replace that stuff myself. I need new pads, and new corks, and new springs. The whole thing is pretty much hosed. But, now that I have confirmation that I need a new one, maybe my husband will finally let me put it in the budget! Hopefully, yours can be fixed. I'm jealous!
