This might suggest to some, however, that American freedoms are worth dying for but not exercising.
You know, that just sums up everything I could ever say about peoople who are so against speaking out against military action.
Now Robertson apologizes after denying what he said. Hmm.

I have mosquito bites. They're driving me bats.
That is all.

Date: 2005-08-25 08:49 am (UTC)That's a real chicken-shit way of addressing the problem, frankly. Treating a dissenting opinion as actively supporting terrorism and/or "demoralizing/endangering" the troops is really just grasping at straws to find some kind of justification for them to "declare war" against the other side- clearly this group was willing to "go to war" on the opposition no matter what excuse they could come up with...very hypocritical and distressing. =P
On the other hand, I'm reminded of a mildly-saddening scene from Hamburger Hill, where one of the men on the front lines in Vietnam receives a letter from his girlfriend, saying that she can't write/be with him anymore because her "college friends" say that the war is immoral and she shouldn't be encouraging it by supporting him*. I can't imagine anyone having the nerve to do something like that.
If I were to play devil's advocate on this whole situation, however, I might suggest that there is a certain threshold of what you might consider that the 1st A is being abused by people who would use free speech in this way...but even if that were true and proven, the right still needs to exist. To Everyone. Period.
*Initially my reaction to this scene was anger, but on further personal reflection I decided that if some stupid girl is flighty enough to cave to the whims of her peers and abandon someone she loves to placate their cause, then to hell with HER! It's no real loss to the guy, though having it done to him at all would still surely be heartbreaking. =\

Date: 2005-08-25 10:39 am (UTC)Robertson is just behaving in typical Republican flip-flopping fashion. No surprise there. God prolly had a little talk with him and told him that he was being a bad little boy.
And if you had bats, you wouldn't have any mosquito bites :P
