I know my house is big, but it just didnt occur to me how much space I have to traverse until I started thinking about putting down ethernet cable...

...and having to question whether a 50-foot cable would be enough to get down to the second floor.

You know, if you have a 1000-foot roll of cat 5, a crimp tool, and a couple of connectors, the length of the run becomes a moot point... :-)

Well, that is, until you hit the 100 meter limit for cat 5 runs. Did a couple of runs in a building once that violated that spec. I bet they still work just fine.
