I didn't get the job at Yankee Candles.

I'm "too smart" she says. And she needs someone with retail experience. I should have seen this coming when she cmmented on Tuesday that it should be really easy for me to find a job, since I have computer skills and experience.

Uhhh...lets see, I have retail experience? How many stores have I worked in since I was 16...let's count.

I'm sure I'm missing one or two.

Oh and whatever happened to "You have experience and thats good. And you certainly have customer service experience. We can teach people how our stocking works and how our cash registers work, but we can't teach them how to be nice." Yeah, she said that.

*reminds self that unemployment is coming in and it is enough to cover rent, bills and groceries*

Well...I guess that means I go to the Starbucks interview. I really REALLY don't want a job where my schedule is going to involve me either coming in at 6AM or working until 930-10pm. But if I get that, I can keep looking. Though...I dont like the idea of taking a job and leaving it a week or two later. In considering how easy it's always been to get a retail job, I never thought about the fact that working in tech support might make it harder to go back to that.

But in the last few weeks, I am a lot happier. Now that I've got the money worked out, I'm far less stressed. I'm sleeping a lot better. I don't dream about fixing computers anymore. I'm getting stuff done that I WANT to get done.

sorry if that was misunderstood...that's somehtign I've heard in a lot of places, it wasn't saying that I'm not nice, it's saying "we can teach you all the skils in the word, but being nice isn't somehtign we can teach"...I've heard it mostly in referecne to jobs where they're okay with people having no experience or skills- "we can teach you how to do the computer stuff, the stocking stuff, the arranging, we cant teach you how to be a nice person"

and what i meant by "she actually said that" was that her saying that was kinda cntradictory to what she said over the phone.

then again when I talked to her on the phne *before* the interview, she said that she hadn't called me previously because I had no retail experience- which is really weird, because at yankee candle, at least at this one, they don't have application forms. They have these little cards where you write your name, phone number address and availability. No one asked me about retail experience. I had called and said "Hey, I was just caing to follow up from stopping in last week and filling out a card." and she just said "Well, you have no retail experience so we wouldn't have a position for you." and then I said "no one ever asked me about experience, and actually I have worked in retail jobs in the past." and THEN she asked me to come in for an interview.

But even in the interview, there was no application, and she didn't even ask for any previous reference phone numbers. I really shouldn't be surprised.

My instinct is this particular manager hires purely on instinct which is really a poor way to run a business. You could go to another Yankee Candle and quite possibly get a totally different treatment.

Indeed, once you've spent any serious amount of time in a "real job" it makes it harder to go back to any sort of lower-end retail. Out of curiousity, is becoming an Apple Genius at all an option for you?

not in baltimore. the towson store is teeny. and EVERYONE from my office applied there, and they hired um...wel, I know the hired one. my supervisr became a mac genius there, and other people applied to other aple stores farher out...but i can't travel to annapolis or VA or bethesda.

I got friendly with one of the tier 2 techs from austin, and he moved to NYC to work as a genius there, he's been trying to get me to apply up there but i'm not moving to NYC
