Slow. Very slow. Tedius, with all the subtlety and grace of a runaway mack truck. Most of it seems like a vehicle for Toni Garrido's singing. The dialog between Orpheus and Eurydice was rather cheesy, both in translation to subtitles and in the Portuguese- as far as I can tell, and I was able to follow it pretty well without watching most of the subtitles- it was about as direct a translation as it could get for the most part.
The only real element of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is the names of the two characters, and that she dies and he cannot bring her back , (in this version there isn't even an attempt to bring her back, except to retrieve her dead body.)
The last maybe thirty minutes are awesome when judged for their own merits- but the retelling of this story they are not. The scene where Orpheus finds the dead Euridyce is both creepy and beautiful at the same time. Orpheus's mother has an awesome moment, and the last two minutes before the closing are just bizarre.
The end of the movie was a great indication that this could have been so much better than it was. I really wanted to like this movie but I have no real interest in seeing it again, let alone buying it to accompany Black Orpheus on my DVD shelf.
