If you're going to make an off-topic post to a mailing list, just make it "off-topic" already. Off-topic posts marked as such don't often bother me unless they're in danger of dominating the list in question.
But for the love of Bob, mark them "off-topic" already. What's up with this "possibly off-topic" nonsense? I mean, if the post is borderline it's one thing. (Trying to think of a good example and failing.) but if the post is of a completely and utterly different topic than the list encompasses and you happen to be posting it because it might be of interest to a few people...just say so: "This is off-topic but I thought it might interest some of you" or something to that effect.
