*sigh* Made a rather egregious error today, it seems. Silly, silly me. I made a post to a community in reference to moving across the country with cats...and I got almost a hundred responses. Many of them were in some way lecturing me about how bad and irresponsible I am to move from Baltimore to Oregon, and how I should stay here and find a job (Oh wait, there's one behind the sofa, it was there the whole- oh, nevermind. It was just the cat.) and accusing me of planning to loaf around while my unemployment runs blah blah blah blah. Then there was the super-special "you won't find a job here because you're not an Oregon native. We don't like outsiders coming in and you'll just be seen as stealing jobs from the locals!" (Wow, I never knew that interstate relocation was so akin to illegal immigration!) The moderators came in and started deleting some of the more obnoxious ones- they deleted at least 35 posts, maybe a few more than that even.

And then wouldn't you know it, one of the uh, best commentors (is that a word?) came back and accused me of deleting posts- that is after another accused me of having "no interest in dissenting opinion". *sigh* People had gone way past "dissenting opinion"- Dear asshole, here's the line of dissent, and here is you and a bunch of others pole vaulting waaaaaaaaay over it. (A moderator has since posted to let them know that it was them deleting the posts.)

Seriously people, you had no ground on which to make judgement calls like that on my situation and then lecture me like I'm some fucktard who just went "Yuk yuk, know what would be really fun? We should move to Oregon and sit around with our fingers in our nose for a year!"

Yeah, I probably won't be making any other posts anytime soon in that community. Because clearly, people there don't know how to answer the question that was asked- and someone said flat out that I shouldn't have said anything about where I'm moving to or from or why, or any other details except for the exact question that I wanted people to answer, therefor people being jerks is all my fault.

Yup, I asked for it.

What a bunch of fucktards. This is why I ask people I know questions online- the last time I asked an innocent question on a forum, I got my butt chewed too. The internet seems like an excuse for dickwads to take out their insecurities on people they never have to see in RL.

You know what? Fuck them. You know what you're planning is best for you. And they have proved that whatever whiny assed opinion they have is worthless.

What community?

Hip_domestics would be a great place to start, I've asked a ton of questions there and really haven't ever been judged.

poor skills. Where people go to throw down but I'm poorer than you, therefore you shouldn't be in the comm. How dare you have cable didn't you know poor people don't have cable!

Sorry babe. If I wasn't in school I would do the trip, but I can't miss any more classes.

Washington is nice, and you can live outside Seattle and work in the city for cheap, well cheaper than MA anyway.

Ugh, Massachusetts is one place I'm glad I'm not anymore; don't get me wrong there are things I liked about it (well, not where I lived, but other places), but in the economy it would be a nightmare (I know, the rest of my family is still there, struggling).

Well, I think we've both learned not to ever ask a question there again. As much online drama as I've put up with, wow, was not expecting that. O.o

Yeah, there are some great things about MA, and some really crappy ones. I'm just really glad that I have lived in the same place, which allows cats, and heat and hot water is included, and the most important part the rent hasn't gone up in 10 years. $1200 a month is still a lot but it could be worse.

Poor skills is a hit or a miss. Some people really freak out there, lots of drama lama's.

I just wish I could help you guys more.

For the record, a HUGE amount of Eugenians are transplants from somewhere else - when I first moved and would tell people I was new, it was by far the first thing they'd tell me. Plus, we have the college which makes up a large percent of the population. So no one is going to freak out about you coming in and "stealing jobs". Total bullshit. People are so messed up.

Based on the comments there I might be thinking Eugene, and Oregon itself, is about the unfriendliest place on earth.

So much rampaging stupid there. :-(

It might be fun for a while, but pointless. They don't listen. However many times we've explained, "We know the situation out there, but the situation here sucks and at least we have people out there we know and can count on, instead of being alone here or somewhere else," it doesn't matter. The lectures still come like we don't know the economy (there or apparently where we live and they don't), like we're moving away from a place we have roots to a place we have nothing (and we assume this why???) and like we're not going to end up homeless here (and in worse conditions than we'd find out there) and blah blah blah, we know better than you.

Ugh, feeling so stabby right now.

When I was in Portland on my trip out west, I came upon the irl manifestation of this. There were some serious assholes everywhere I went.

Also, I think that there are almost no jobs in Portland, recession or no recession. According to my friend who lives in Seattle, he looked into moving there, but realized that people there mostly telecommuted to Seattle.

Don't know about Eugene. Hopefully it's better!

This is so stupid. Really, how do you get a usable response regarding pet moving if you don't give a starting and ending destination? That was a huge factor in our being able to get the service we needed. Good gods, people suck. I'm sorry. :(

*lol* In that case, we have a TON of jobs! We give you one! Just, don't breathe at work and you should be just fine.

this actually made it to stupidpetowners - not to be mean to you, but to call those people out on their ridiculous comments.

should you care to read: http://community.livejournal.com/stupidpetowners/3822601.html

and as others have said...p_s is basically the oppression olympics. MAYBE give [livejournal.com profile] moar_skills a try?

aack, sorry about that.

Just rehome fluffy! It's less mean than driving them in a car.
"As for moving the cats, personally, I wouldn't want to do that to a cat. As sad as it would be to leave them behind I think it would be worse to put them through a move like that. Is re-homing them an option?"

This is from an LJ community focusing on low-cost methods for doing things. The OP asked about pet transportation across the country and the post above was one of the responses. This makes me very, very sad that people still think like this. Our shelters have a hard enough time keeping up with relinquishment from legitimate concerns!
I've driven and flown cross country with my pets multiple times and while they don't love it, I bet they'd love a convenience euthanasia less. I know this reply didn't suggest euthanasia, but it's the same mentality which allows someone think it's an okay solution to their problem.

the resulting comments are in the same vein of "lordy those people are stupid for telling that couple to ditch their cats."

Eh, there are assholes everywhere, and the level of friendliness I demand seems very different from what other people want. But I think if four people we know can relocate there and love it, we don't have to worry about a gaggle of hicks watching us warily wherever we go and trying to get the outsiders to go back to where they came from.

Ah good. That deserves to be mocked. That that suggestion was made at all bothered me, I sincerely hope the person who made it doesn't have pets.

i agree...if i hadn't been dealing with a nasty issue last night IRL, i probably would have pounced on that user when i first saw the post. it's ridiculous that people should be expected to give up pets before a big move.

it's got me thinking about our move in the next few years, though - by then we'll have a dog and the two cats, and that will make for one hell of an interesting move.

Geez what is their problem? They should be more supportive.
From what I know the economy is less hard hit in places that have more internalized economies- i.e. agriculture, natural resources based, such as North Dakota, where my bf & I were thinking about moving to. Decided against it, at least for now, since then both of us would have to find jobs, not just one.

Shit, more oppression Olympics than anything useful, with every experience I and friends of mine have had. Even when they're bitching and lecturing, yeah, sometimes I can see a point behind it, but if they'd read the whole post or comment they'd just responded to, they'd know that the person they responded to *already knew that point*.
