Flip Flops in the white house spark controversy

Okay, so maybe I'm a bad person, or maybe I'm terribly horribly disrespectful, or maybe I'm just plain clueless, but Um...OH NO WE JUST CAN'T WEAR FLIP FLOPS IN FRONT OF THE PRESIDENT! Whatever will the neighbors think?

*Sigh* I dunno, I just *Don't* get what is so horrible about this. Can anyone explain to me why wearing sandals to the white house would be "disrespectful"??? All issues with Shrub aside, do you honestly think he was all that concerned with their footwear? This is one instance in which I would actually like to hear what he had to say about the matter...if nothing else, out of sheer curiousity.

I dunno, I've just always been confused by what is considered "ettiquette" or whatever. I'm not getting started on that rant.

regardless of who is in the office, the office of the president should be afforded a modicum of respect, which would be shown by dressing slightly up. nicer sandals, perhaps. flip flops are pretty lax. mind you, i live in them, but...

hell, in other countries, there are actual real dress codes for showing up at governmental offices and such.

Yeah, I think that's pretty much the dumbest thing I've ever heard. What's wrong with flip flops anyway?!? They all looked fine to me! It's not like they were wearing scrubby dirty clothes or something- they all looked nice! Whatever. *Shrug*

Wearing flip-flops is like the laziest thing a person can wear -- it's like saying "you're not worth me taking time to put one something a little more appropriate". The Office of the President should be shown the respect ... doesn't matter if it's Bush, Kerry or a Republican or a Democrat.

in all fairness, she did wear her nice flip-flops. It's not like she wore ones that she would use on the beach or anything. Guess ya gotta read the actual articles about this whole "Flip Flop Flap" to understand the issue... like how Jenna Bush wore flip flops to court.

There is no dress code for a reason... it leaves it to the freedom afforded the individual how they will convey themselves. And if the office-holder is arrogant enough to think they deserve better, they might want to get a reality check. After all, the Office of the President is not a royal office, and the individual is addressed as Mr. President (until such time as a woman is elected). You dress in your finest to meet the Queen of England; not King George II of America.

With all the security checks that require the removal of shoes, I'd rather wear flip flops then have to take my shoes off. That's exactly what I did when I flew to Austin a couple years ago.

Hmm....I'm feeling kinda conflicted about this.
Part of me says "who the hell cares about their *feet*? It's just shoes, for crying out loud!!! And this is news? What is it that slow of a news day??
On the other hand, going to the White House is a big deal, regardless of how one feels about the current tenant. One should at least make an effort to dress up somewhat (ie..no jeans, no flip flops, no scrunchies, no tshirts) out of respect for the occasion. I mean, you wouldn't wear flip flops on a job interview...just my .02

Granted, you should respect the office of POTUS even if you don't respect his opinions on the issues and you should dress up when you see him instead of wearing flip-flops, but is this their way of getting the media to focus on something other than the Karl Rove controversy?
