For [livejournal.com profile] jackgreen60 (or anyone else that cares...) Itzpapalotl (pronounced just like it looks...Itz-pop-a-lotl)

A fire goddess of the Aztecs, appearing in the form of a butterfly or occasionally a deer. The name Itzpapalotl means "Obsidian Butterfly"

Here's a page with some more detailed information on her mythology, including her association with buterfies.

Other deities wither butterfly asociations...

Chiowotamahke (Native American- The Pima, Arizona.)

Psyche (Greek)

Not many deities associated with butterflies. (There were a couple of others on the same website, but it didn't seem like the god or godess was particularly associated with butterflies, so much as a buterfly appeared on one of their myths.

Ponder.

The Powerful Play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?

Thought.

Aztec deities' names are fun to say. But the deities themsevles are somewhat scary.

A few names...

Itzpapalotl
Coyolxauqui
Coatlique
Huehueteotl
Mixcoatl

Yes, they're spelled correctly. No, I didn't look them up. Yes, they are all gods/goddesses in the Aztec pantheon. Yes, I can pronounce them. There are some names that are FAR worse to spell and pronounce. How/why would I know such a thing? I took a class in Aztec art and history in college. I had to learn how to spell and pronouce a of these (and quite a laundry list of others!)

I am a veritabe fount of random information that you never knew you didn't want to know.
