I talked to my mother today. Found out that my uncle Dennis died the other day. This was the one who has had pancreatic cancer for a year and a half now, but I only found out around Thanksgiving.

Dennis is the husband of Geri, one of my stepfather's sisters. I guess you'd say they were the quieter couple in that crazy family. I didn't see them very often when I lived up there- Christmas and sometimes Easter mostly, but they- as well as the rest of Mike's family- have always felt more like real family than those I'm actually related to. They used to say that they were going to stop giving all the kids in the family Christmas presents after they turned eighteen, but they kept giving me presents for several years after that.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it up for the funeral. I just don't have the money.
