Job Stuff.

I have a job interview Friday after work at Best Buy at the Harbor for computer sales. I don't know PC stuff, so I don't qualify for Geek Squad, which I applied for.

As I see it: If they're willing to pay me within 50 cents/hour of what I'm making now, I can take it and keep looking. If that's the case, I can also walk there. Which would be good excercise and save me money on public transportation. The manager that is interviewing me aready said they'd have no problems giving me Sundays off but I'd have to work some Saturdays.

I'm NOT expecting that they'll pay me what I'm asking for, so I probably won't take that one. I need a job making at least what I'm making now so I can pay my rent and bills and have money to you know, do the things that people do with money.

We'll see what happens.

During our 4 hours dead time on Friday I was wandering around, talking to various people and a supervisor in another epartment told me that he was going to try and find me because he wanted me to apply for his department...which requires a ot more prior knowledge about the workings of Windows than I have...plus requires being able to work like 3pm-midnight...not doing that. But its nice to be wanted.

I'm feeling a lot better...my throat doesn't hurt- in fact, I just ate some chicken, pasta and veggies with a bit of red pepper in it, no problemo. Coughing a LOT less. Sniffling a lot less. My voice sounds...sorta okay. This is good. I can go to work tomorrow.

If he has faith in you, then you should apply.

Windows isn't really all that special or hard.

It's worth a try.

well, he didn't realize i don't know windows and when i said so, he just dropped it and said he thought i knew it.

see, i can use windows...i don't know how to troubleshoot it, even basic stuff. which for that job, they don't train you on. between that and the hours required...not a combo i want to pick up.

It's much easier to pick up than you believe. Hardware is hardware. Mac hardware is more focused because of the low variety but Windows hardware is easy because there's so much out there and the basics are the same.

Windows itself is so arcane that few people have encyclopedic knowledge and the people who do get paid more than Best Buy pays. You would not be expected to know everything and you're quick enough that you would not have any trouble.

Next time a Windows job comes up don't worry about it.

I'll keep that in mind. But if they say "Do you know how to fix windows", the only answers I know are reboot, format:C or buy a mac. For a lot of jobs, that doesnt even get me an interview. for others, it might get me an interview at most. Unless there was some training provided, I wouldn't even know where to start with troubleshooting windows. Hell, I don't even have a clue how to check the IP address. I could read a book, and probably wil at some point in the near future...but I'm very kinetic when it comes to this sort of thing...I need to be able to do what i'm learning (that's why i did so well in my mac tech suport training. there was so much *doing* as oposed to pure textbook/lecture)

Now a job that just involves *using* windows I could muddle my way through to begin with. I've used it enough to have basic functionality there. It would be a while til I could do all the spiffy stuff I can do with Macs though.

the best buy job is the least of my worries, i think I'll die of shock if they offer me enough money to even vaguely consider it. The other job at my office...I really don't want. I honestly want to get out of the call center thing. Being tethered to a desk 40+ hours/week is driving me bats.

Geek Squad! Ed actually owns a Geek Squad shirt (even though he doesn't work for Best Buy, a friend of ours stole him a shirt).

well, if you ever *want* to learn WinBlows, just let me know... should be able to qualify you for Geek Squad in a few hours :) Not like it's rocket science.
