...that a lot of times, when a lot of people say things like "To each their own", they're not really saying "That's fine, I don't necessarily agree with you but I don't have a problem with you thinking/doing that if that's what you're into" They're often saying something more like "you're off your rocker and there's something very wrong with you, but i'm going to keep the peace and act like a nice person"

It dawned on me a few weeks ago, that most of the time when I hear "to each his own" it is accompanied by a weird look, and the person moving ever so slightly farther away from me. Usually in reference to paganism, but not always. As if just standing near me is going to somehow adversely affect them.

I also hear it a lot from my stepfather in reference to music, TV, movies, stuff like that that I like and he doesn't, in a voice that definitely says "i would never be caught dead enjoying such a thing, and you are a lowbrow cretin if you waste your time on that" I get this a lot. It makes me mad. Yes, I know things like Dawson's Creek are silly...but they're fun. Yes, I am a very intelligent person, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy something brainless every now and then. Some people like Austin Powers...I like silly WB network shows.

Everyone's biased to their own beliefs to some extent...and unfortunately most people are not very willing to listen and really accept others' opinions (just take a look at the areas of the world in the biggest crises)...though on the bright side, modern thinking has improved this a great deal when we compare with the past.

There's a difference in assessing the character of a person with regard to entertainment as opposed to religion. I can't think of many broad instances where one is directly related to the other- only in specific cases.

For example, my liking guns, chocolate, Insane Clown Posse, and the Austin Powers series has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a self-proclaimed God-fearing Xian. Furthermore, it sure as hell is not an indicator of my GPA (and I will condescendingly imagine that many Austin Powers fans have a GPA of less than 2.0)- but what does that have to do with anything?

At the risk of this coming back to me later, I'd say that what you do for fun shouldn't be reflective of what kind of person you are, unless you're a fanatic or some kind of pervert.

::shrug:: Take it all in stride, I suppose.

i know...i was just kinda ranting all over the place....it's just not a particularly happy thing when someone gives you that kind of look, says "well, to each their own" in that smug, superior voice and starts backing away...ya know? religion is definitely not the same as entertainment....but it all bugs me sometimes. i wasn't really trying to compare the two...just bitching about them both at the same time.

by the way...insane clown posse scares me, but hey....to each his own, right? :-Þ
