May. 17th, 2006 05:04 pmBah, ok...so a select few of you know how I got a lovely overdraft notice on Saturday...and I took a look at it and thought it was my Netflix account that I hadn't had the opportunity to temporarily suspend. It didn't occur to me that even after sales tax, the amount withdrawn was about $3 more than the Netflix charge should have been. (I have everythgin covered, I borrowed some money from my Mom, I got my unemployment check, we're god to go.
Then! I find out today that my account has been overdrawn again...this time it WAS the Netflix account. So I call my bank to find out Where the hell this other debit was from because I write less than one check a month, and I haven't used my ATM card in over 2 weeks.
Somehow, some company called Roadside Plus has been charging me $21.95 a month since March for gawds knows what. I have no idea how I never caught that on my bank statement. I've never heard of them and it was a direct account debit, not a Visa debit, so somehow they got my account number. Other than setting up my account in the first place, I've never done anyhting with my bank account over the net...I don't even use online banking (partially due to a password issue, aparently I don't know my own password and keep forgetting to try to fix that. But it's only for online access so I'm okay otherwise)
So Wachovia gives me the number to the company, I call them up and they said it was some trial thing I signed up for, and agreed to have charged to my account if I did not cancel in the indicated time. My ass I did.
Well, they cancelled it and gave me a cnfirmation number and I tried to talk to the rep about looking into the charges because I'd never even heard of the company. She insisted that there was nothing to do, I agreed to it so they wouldn't do anyhitng about it and hung up on me.
I called back...unfortunately got the same person, she cut me off after I gave my first name and told me that there was no possibility of a refund or anyhting and that I had agreed to it so there. (She didn't actually say "so there" but might as well have) She said that they sent me two reminders before charging me- I never recieved any and have since thoroughly chanedk my email and spam folders- I asked what email address it was sent to, she gave me my norma address, the one that I never give out to businesses and such unless there's really good reason to (i have a junk account that I use for online business stuff with VERY few exceptions- Netflix, Ebay, Wachovia and Cingular) I asked to speak to a supervisor, she said she was the supervisor. She wouldn't give me her name or any other information. I asked to speak to someone else in the department, she said that no one was going to do anyhitng for me and hung up.
I was ready to kill. Instead of caling back and risking getting the same person again, I called Wachovia, explained the situation and asked what course of action I had through them. They told me that they could file a dispute. Since I said I had not authorized the charges, they refunded the overdraft fees and send me a form where I would include any pertinent info about the incident. Unless there was compelling evidence that I had in fact authorized the transactions, I would not be responsible and would eventualy get the money back.
*grumble*
EDIT: I just googled "roadside plus", the name of the company...and the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th results are a pretty good evidence of some sort of fraudulent activity. I called Wachovia to inform them of this and they asked me to print copies of whatever I find and include them with my dispute report, which will help the reseacher assigned to my case.
time to go cook food.
