Sep. 18th, 2006 05:58 pmI might have a job...I'll be more certain tomorrow afternoon. It's a temp-hire position with Ikea. after 90 days as a temp, if I haven't completely effed up, they just hire me on with an automatic pay increase.
I filled out all the papers with the employment agency today. Tomorrow I go up to Ikea to meet and greet, and unless I really suck they call the temp place and tell them they want me to start October 2nd and then I do. I still have to pass a drug test and criminal background check but I haven't even taken Advil in months and I have no crimninal background. (They haven't caught me jaywalking yet!)
So basically, it's catalog sales for Ikea, people call me and say "I want to order a futon" and I place the order. It's a sales position so they want me to suggest things also "Would you like an end table with that futon? And we have this lovely coordinating futon cover" blah blah, I can do that. They pay monthly comissions on sales. 90 days after They hire me permanently, I get another pay increase and then benefits kick in....401k with 100% matching, 100% tuition reimbursement for school, 5 weeks of paid vacation in the first year? "Really great health coverage" (we'll find out what that means) Oh hell yeah.
I'm not too crazy about the idea of having to work Saturdays...and commute to Whte Marsh, but if the job's half decent or better, and for benefits like that I can live with it and request off once every six weeks or so when I need it. And they told me you get to pick your other day off each week, if that's the case, I'll ask for Mondays and still have my "weekend"
igf anyone needs a job here in Baltimore and wants to do the same thign for Ikea, let me know. I can refer you for a referral bonus :-)
So I decided a little while back that I actually need to think about getting a driver's license and car. Not just yet, but by the time I finish doing the clergy program work. I don't anticipate lots of emergency instances where I'll have to speed off to help someone, but yeah, that whole "serving the community" thing would definitely be better facilitated with a vehicle of one's own.
