I'm sure by now many of you have heard about the shooting of several girls in an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania a few days ago...that happened in Lancaster County...just a few miles down the road from Lancaster city where I lived. In a teeny little village. Words just don't describe the atrocity, and I am not going to talk much about it right now because I'm at work and it's just to much of an emotional trigger.

Words can als not describe the horror that I felt hen I saw this on my friends list this morning:

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/viewstory.asp?Page=/Nation/archive/200610/NAT20061004a.html

(Basically, if you don't want to read it..and I don't blame you...Fred Phelps is planning to picket the funerals of these girls.)

now they're saying that the WBC has agreed not to go to the funerals because they've been offered an hourlong spot on a Foxnews station...I just can't believe some people. I'm sure many people are thankful to Mike Gallagher for offering the airtime to keep them away from the funerals...

"Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of church's pastor, told FOXNews.com the group canceled the protests in exchange for an hour of radio time Thursday on syndicated talk-show host Mike Gallagher's radio program....

Gallagher said that church officials would have to sign a document making them liable for the airtime if they broke their promise not to demonstrate.

"It's awful for me to give up an hour of my radio show ... but I think it’s worth the sacrifice to keep them away," Gallagher said.

But she defended the church's initial decision to protest at the Amish girls' funerals.

"Those Amish people, everyone is sitting around talking about those poor little girls — blah, blah, blah — they brought the wrath upon themselves," Phelps-Roper said, adding that the Amish "don't serve God, they serve themselves."

So the Amish are evil godless sinners too, huh? Honestly is there anyone these miserable assholes don't have a problem with?

only themselves it seems. i think these people would have protested at mother theresa's funeral if they could have... i think they're ones who "don't serve God, they serve themselves."

*shakes head* What people do in the name of their version of Christianity. Jesus said don't judge others lest you be judged and look what they're doing. Granted, I'm being judgemental myself when I say that but these people are full of hate for their neighbor, which goes against Jesus's teachings as well.
You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

These folks get publicity the same way Howard Stern and Ann Coulter do..shock the masses by stooping ever more low than was previously thought possible. The fact that they were placated by an hour on a radio program speaks volumes.

I'm just in tears here.

I can't believe that. The Amish are wonderful people. Perhaps I put the plain folk up on a pedestal but to resist the world changing around them to live a life of simplicity is pretty amazing.

And to think they just wish to be left alone without intrusion upon their way of life. That man should rot in hell for his descration of a poor girl's funeral.

Yes, I am judgemental *God*dammit.

These WBC people aren't Christians. They can't be, since they're ignoring the "love thy neighbor" commandment, given by Jesus Himself in the gospels. (Apparently, their leadership has their heads up their arses, so I seriously doubt they're busy reading the Bible anyway . . . Ahem.)

What really broke my heart about this whole thing was what I heard on the news this morning from the survivors - they said the older girls who died were offering themselves up in the place of the younger girls. My Gods, how does a teenager find the courage and faith to do that? It gives me chills.

I can only hope, that in similar circumstances, I could have the courage to do that to save someone I cared so much about. Gods hold them.

And by the by, can't those WBC folks have their 501(c)3 status revoked for crap like this?

They're using their church mainly for political ends, which is against IRS policy (I've read the whole booklet the IRS produces for churches).

i just heard about all this recently. i was really upset by the news (i think i punched phil a few times for telling me). but these people's reactions.... its all equally sick. it's so frightening, not only the crime itself, but these peoples attitudes towards it. i don't know what to say. there is something seriously wrong with these people. :-(
