Yesterday was lots of fun, if a comedy in miscommunications.

Chris didn't make it, called around 1 to let me know that he was sick. Everyone was running late. Nicole and I ventured down to the Harbor and got there around 3, walked back and forth between the science center and the corner of Pratt and Light a few times before finding [livejournal.com profile] aikinut and [livejournal.com profile] ding_0_. Eventually, Courtney, Chrissy and Megan showed up, as did Phil. Jackie, Wes, Steph, Jesse, Steph's parents, [livejournal.com profile] dcnblus and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone. Afterwards we all ventured over to bluehouse for a while where we had food, and then eventually back to my house where [livejournal.com profile] liritsvoice showed up with the best birthday card EVER, we snuggled a bit on the sofa and goofed off til she had to leave, and then Jackie and Wes had to leave. Chrissy, Megan and Courtney were still around, so we played some board games and then there was a spontaneous pie-baking effort around midnight. (Oh, and the birthday mini-cake thing. Deadly.) Then they left around two and there was sleep.

This morning, I started knitting a scarf- which will be finished as soon as the ball of yarn runs out. It will be a decently long scarf. I'm actually considering unravelling the recycled silk crocheted granny squares that have been sitting in my room forever now, plying them with another yarn (plain cotton maybe, but I'm not sure) and knitting them into a blanket on these-here gihugeic needles. It's either that, or having to buy a lot more yarn to finish a granny-square blanket. And I think stripes would look cool. And that much more silk yarn would be REALLY heavy. (The pile of squares is already effing heavy to begin with).

That however, will all take place after I've finished Christmas presents for my assorted family members.

More planning for Yule happened today. Courtney baked an apple pie for my birthday (That along with the cherry pie that Steph made, which is still here...) and I performed a Run Valdr attunement (with at least one more to do next week.)

I should sleep soon. I feel like I've been awake forever.

Sorry we didn't get a chance to talk, it seemed like you were pretty busy with everyone else you had planned to meet. But I'm sure we'll run into each other again. :)

it was nice to meet you, but it waws pretty crazy. No doubt we'll collide again at some point in the future.

You had mentioned wanting to ask about ADF?

Oh yeah, I was just curious what it's like being an attached Hellenist with them. I'm vaguely aware that they include Hellenists in their groups in some way, but wasn't sure how that worked. Something about including all 'hearth cultures'? I sure hope I'm making sense. :)

yeah, you got it. "hearth cultures" is the term that ADF uses to refer to the different IE cultures.

In a nutshell, the ADF flavor of Druidry is Pan-Indo-European in its scope. Not recon, but strongly recommends using the best historical sources available for information, as far back as possible, includig oiginal sources when available. (In that way, I think that people who are Hellenic or Roman leaning have somethign of an advantage.)

The interest in reconstruction bit me last spring, and since then I took some time to figure out where I fall in between everythign and how to reconcile one with the other- (I couldn't give up ADF or my Grove for anything, but still very pulled to the Hellenic) and I finally decided that I can balance the two- within the Grove, we work in the ADF ritual style; on my own, at least in thought, I am much more Hellenistic. I am still working out my personal religious practice, and have also found a few people that are interested in Hellenic reconstruction that are reasonably nearby- one of my roommates, another Grovemate, one ADF member in College Park who sometimes comes to the Grove, and a couple of other folks down in College Park. We're trying to work out some sort of monthly meeting, hopefully to start in January, if not February.

I'm sad I had to miss your birthday festivities. I hope you will understand when I tell you that I was paid for the knitting class in Malabrigo (http://www.malabrigoyarn.com/catalogo.htm)!

'Not recon' as in they created their rituals out of wholecloth, or 'not recon' as in they just can't prove the historical religions really looked like what they do? The latter's more like the boat we're all in, though you're right about the Classical religions having an advantage, more primary sources, etc.

I took some time to figure out where I fall in between everythign and how to reconcile one with the other

The more I've studied ancient Hellenic religion, especially in later stages, the more I see a trend towards syncretism. This was not an isolated culture, and as time went by, they only grew more and more cosmopolitan. At this point, I really don't see a conflict in worshipping the Gods of other cultures in addition to the Greek Gods.

I guess the major problem for me in an ADF context is that I worship Isis, and they don't do Egyptian from what I hear, even though Greeks and Romans certainly did. So did Gauls and Celts because of Roman import, but oh well.

not recon as in not attempting to be exactly what the Druids were back in the day, and have constructed its own ritual format.

there's a lot of discussion about this. and there's nothing to keep you from worshipping any gods that you want, IE or not, no one's gonna say "ooh, you worship Isis, you're not welcome here." Our Senior Druid has three goddesses that she considers her patrons- Danu, Gaia and..Isis.

Basically, aDF as an organization has a specific ritual structure and format, and what falls outside of that isn't verboten, it's simply "not adf." There's been talk of, for instance the worship of Isis in the Greek or Roman context, and how that could be considered IE and therefore faling unde ADF, whereas in the Egyptian context would not be. And....to put it as someone else did, "There are no Druid police." No one comes around and checks who you're worshipping and ticks off boxes for every detail in your ritual or any such thing.

If youre interested in ADF, you would be welcome and your worshipping Isis would not be a problem. I also know of at least one other ADF member offhand that does worship the Egyptian gods in a more Egyptian context.
