Someone posted on a list I'm on today, about their personal morality.

I'm going to be perfectly honest. Without going into long detail. Why I don't do some things isn't based on my religious beliefs at all. I go with how I feel.

I don't murder because I don't want to go to jail. Not only that but I actually do feel bad for families who have lost loved ones to murder, and I know what that feels like. There have been people who have made me that angry, but I hold back. Usually those people are a waste anyway, not worth my time.

I don't rape because, well, honestly I'm a woman and I don't have to. Too many horny guys in the world. If I want it that bad I'm pretty sure I can get it.

Maiming is too time consuming.

And stealing to me is just ridiculous. If anyone has anything I want I'll just pick up some extra hours to have money to buy it. If I was really bad off and starving on the other hand, yeah I would steal.

I pretty much agree with you, except for one thing: Rape isn't about sex. It's about power.

if [livejournal.com profile] chironcentaur sees your comment, you will no doubt be on the recieving end of a rather long response regarding the different types of rapists and their reasons for doing it (she's studied a lot about that stuff, I got the talk just a little while ago myself)

To clarify the post, the part that I cut was not written by me, it is a pasting of the post that I find dubious.

I only save the gory details for you. I know how much you love hearing about it, and I like knowing that, for instance, you'll never look at a giraffe the same way again because of me. :-)

I know, I know: "Listen, bitch..." *shaking fist of rage*

No need for a long response. Just to say rape is a behavior committed by individuals who will all have their own individual reasons for acting out on the behavior; not all rapists are the same and so naturally their motives will not be the same either. Power is a common motive, but it most certainly can be about the sex as well (though of course not the way Moonbeam Dipshit up here put it, can't get laid on my own so I guess I have to become a rapist now).

What's dubious about it? I'm more comfortable with someone who has an intrinsic morality like that than I am with someone who does the "right" thing because her imaginary friend will get mad if she doesn't.

I don't think it matters what somebody's motivations are. That's their business, not yours.

as I commented to Keith...

If the desire to not go to jail is enough to keep someone from hacking me to bits...well, that's great, however I think I'd prefer that they had some additional motivation. Because otherwise, that just says to me if the opportunity were there to do so without being found out, then they might just do it.

honestly, motivation isn't my concern. whatever reasons a person might have for engaging or not engaging in certain behaviors are their own, and not our place to judge. all that matters is the action.

I don't know this person (I don't think) and obviously have no business debating her moral fiber in this forum, but whatever keeps someone from hacking their neighbor to bits, be it their conscious, or lack of resources, or the guidance from their imaginary friend, or the simple desire not to get their clothes all bloody, really doesn't matter. All that matters is that they don't do it.

same goes for rape. I'm sure there are as many reasons for raping as there are for rapists committing them, but unless you're rehabilitating them or writing a book about them, these reasons are irrelevant compared to the act of rape itself.

You'll get no argument from me there, there is no motive good enough to excuse the act itself.

what [livejournal.com profile] chironcentaur said...but I would call the reasons far from irrelevant, as knowing why someone might commit such a monstrous act may be helpful in prevention.

does something because she's intellectually lazy and fears legal retribution = Bases behavior on religious beliefs. Doesn't matter if the it's the real policeman at the precinct or the imaginary policeman in the sky.

You say rather than that she empathizes with others, but she said I actually do feel bad for families who have lost loved ones to murder, so I'd say you and I are not talking about the same person.

This is part of a twenty-some-odd email thread...in other posts, this girl basically says that murder is the only crime where some sort of feelings for othres take any precidence, she elaborates slightly in a way that makes it sound like the feelings of others are a very marginal precidence. I can't access my email, so I can't post that part.

But what about the rape...she doesn't do it because she can get laid. Oh, and because she's a woman. Women never do such things. What would happen if she decided she wanted some sex one day and just couldn't get some? Or the maiming? It just takes too much time. what if someone pissed her off one day and there just happened to be a knife or chainsaw handy?

Maybe this person is just really bad at expressing her thoughts in writing. But people's further questions for clarification of what she's saying only result in the same type of answers.

My own personal moral code, I admit, is not so much routed in religious belief; I wasn't even religious until I was in my twenties, one would hope I could figure out how to behave like a decent human being before then. But while I may not have a divine scripture to point to, I would like to think that if asked why I haven't murdered anybody yet, I could come up with a much better response then, "Well, I just haven't met anyone who would be worth the effort yet." For the record, I have met people who were worth the effort in my eyes, people who were very abusive to me and if my only reason for abstaining from murder was that it just hadn't come up yet, I guess I'd be a serial killer by now. Thankfully for all involved, I'm more thoughtful than that.

As for Dipshit here, we all better watch out for when she starts getting older and men are no longer lusting after her oh so hot body, according to her own statements, there will be nothing stopping her from becoming a rapist.

it's not so much a matter of one's "imaginary friend", or religion, whatever...I know that atheism doesn't make one a criminal any more than religion makes one a good person.

She's saying that she wouldn't murder because she doesn't want to go to jail, she wouldn't maim because she thinks it would take so long...if her feelings are as shallow as she indicates, she doesn't commit crime because she doesn't want to be inconvenienced, and rapists are just guys that can't get lucky.

If the desire to not go to jail is enough to keep someone from hacking me to bits...well, that's great, however I think I'd prefer that they had some additional motivation. Because otherwise, that just says to me if the opportunity were there to do so without being found out, then they might just do it.

Well, I don't have much to say here more than anyone else has already said, but I will say: I totally love your Apollo icon and wish that I had me an Athena-Nike one.

*sigh*

Umm...dunno about Athena-Nike, but if you look at [livejournal.com profile] pixelbee, there a a bajillion icons for about a bajillion gods all in different colors and for public consumption. you have to go back a number of pages to find them, but they're there.
