*sigh*

Why does nothing go right? Why is everything all messed up? Why is it that I work all day on computers...and then I come home and somethign is always wrong with my computer and I have to work on the computers at home? The new computer, the one that's running XP so nicely and was working perfectly yesterday is now not recognizing its ethernet card. At least, that's what it says when I insert the Cavalier cd and try to run the setup again. SEttings are correct and the internet works. I know this because I'm currently connected by way of The Evil. If The Evil can connect, the internet is ok. Things were better at work today. It was really really slow and like I said before, I haven't killed my chances of getting that new position.

The house is stony silent. It's not peaceful silent, it's...driving me crazy. I will probably go to bed soon.

I've decided that I want to try to go to Greece in 2008 sometime. I told mom this and she's got all these questions...who I'm going with, why I want to go there, how I'll get there, will i take an organized tour, what I'll do, why on earth don't I just take a Caribbean cruise?

Caribbean cruise? I don't know um....those crumbled old Greek temples aren't exactly there in abundance in the Caribbean. Otherwise, I have no blasted clue. I only decided a few days ago that I wanted to go and Haven't really gotten any more detailed than "2008".

Then she tells me I should find a women's group to travel with. Or a singles tour.

A SINGLES TOUR?????? Ew.

I don't know. I'd love to travel by myself. But there are safety considerations and all. But, like I said...I only decided this a few days ago, and there is some time to work it out.

Oh, and then she suggests I email Grandpa for travel tips. Her father. Who I last saw at Grandmom's funeral what...4 years ago? And before that hadn't seen since my senior year of high school. "Hi, Um...remember me? I'm your granddaughter. Can you give me some advise about European travel?"

So mom said she'd email him for me. Apparently, it's one of those that that he will talk anyone's ears off about. Can't say I'm surprised, the little that I do know of him is that he and Louise (his not-wife for as long as anyone can remember) spend almost all of their time country-hopping. When they're not travellig around, they live in one of those condos across the street from the art museum in Philadelphia (If you've ever been to the art museum, you probably know exactly which building it is. They face each other.)

Right now, I'm thinking of going to sleep.

I was in Greece by myself. I lived.

The think that will get you is the pollution in Athens and trying to schedule things. Scheduling things...is fluid.

Also, people giving the wrong change and trying to get you to come to their businesses by walking up to you on the street.

But not dangerous as such compared to even our own country.

Check to make sure the wireless card is right. The first one we put in my laptop worked in my room but wouldn't work in the office. Turns out it was a fluke and wasn't the right one for my computer. If it's a PC with a wireless card though, I'm not sure. *sends big healing waves*

Jeremy and I went on a Contiki tour for our honeymoon, and although it is a tour company for 18-35 year olds it wasn't nearly as cheesy as we expected. I think they have a tour in Greece, so it might be something to check out.

The pollution is not nearly as bad these days (you went a while back, right?).

Note to Fuego: If you want to go to Greece and want to travel with someone, after this summer, I will be going to Greece every summer for pretty much the entire summer. You could always tell people that worry about you how you have this great and awesome friend rebecca who's going to meet you in Athens and take you a bunch of awesome places ;)

oooh Greece sounds like a wonderful idea!(especially the 'old crumbling temples')

I always found doing a little sacrifice to Hermes helped, since ethernet is communcation. Although everytime I have trouble with my xp computer I threaten switching to Linux....im still using xp however.

If you do go to Greece, I have old neighbors from there who are always up for offering suggestions for travelers. Let me know when and where you're going when you go, and I'll hit them up for tips on your itinerary.

I did a Mediterranean cruise last summer, about half of which was Greece. I am very fond of cruising - I think it was a really nice way to spend a day per island, and be magically transported to the next spot. I suspect you'd want to spend more time at particular destinations than a cruise might allow, though. (That can be partially accomplished by perhaps adding a few days before/after and see more of the mainland. And, in my experience in Europe a lot of travel can be accomplished not terribly pre-planned by taking trains.)

IME the ideal way to travel is with one other reasonably like-minded person. Of course, finding one of those may not be too easy. I've only done limited being out and about by myself in strange places, and I really do like cruises for that. Incidentally, I never take cruise-offered tours, either. Group tours can be ok, but you have to be really sure that you get to see the things you want to see, instead of the things that have the right kinds of agreements with your tour guides, and prepare to be sold to.

Yeah, I was gonna say, don't sweat the safety considerations. Once you live in Baltimore for a year, "safety considerations" for anywhere tamer than Beirut go right out the window.

I recommend Rick Steve's excellent "Europe through the Back Door". While it doesn't have much info on Greece specifically, he does know a lot about European travel. Talking with a chatty but knowledgeable grandpa about it sounds like fun, even if you don't know him that well.

Greece sounds awesome, by the way. Start being excited!
