I wish that I could draw. That is to saw, draw as well as I'd like to be able to.

Because for some time now I've had this astounding image of Itzpopalotl, the Aztec Obsidian Butterfly goddess in my mind.

She scares me.

But I wish I could draw her.

This sparked a flurry of Google-Imagiomancy, and I turned up these obsidian surprises. Thought I'd share. I really like some of these.

Ancient rendition, link to really cool LA...umm..."A Wholistic Education Practicioner (http://www.chrysalisproject.org/)"...heh heh heh, I like that:

An excellent piece by Carolina Eade (http://usuarios.vtr.net/~c_eade/carolina/index2.htm):

Ah! But therein lies her mystery. The "cartoony" look is strictly because she is partially represented by her codex symbol which is an ancient cartoon in of itself. Though she may look peaceful as she stands in her regenerative/mortuary phase, don't be fooled by her calm demeanor. Her wingtips are razor sharp, she wears the mortuary mask of death on part of her face, the jaguar spirit within claws at the sky to bring the life-giving rains as well as the floods. Her nose piercing is a small obsidian knife, used, when the time is necessary, to relieve a dying man of his suffering. Her deep beauty is marked with pain. Even her own headband is a braided strip of her own bloodied skin, cut from her forehead. She is everything beautiful and terrible about creation. She is the fighting passion of life itself.

Thanks for your interest in my artwork. Great blog by the way :)
Best to you,
Susanne

Thanks for the commentary....actually, the "cartoony" comment was in reference to an image that was in between the two here that seems to have been removed from the artist's site, that particular image had a look like it was inspired by a cross between anime and some popular "fairy" art.

Just curious...how did you come across this entry? I honestly forgot that I had ever written about my attempting to draw her (still working on it, getting nowhere with translating mental image to paper...)

I found your link by searching the internet. I'm always interested in discovering like-minded souls who have an interest in world mythology. As far as drawing Itzpapalotl, let your heart be your guide. Try an earthy substance first, like finger painting, and don't judge the outcome. See where your senses lead you.She will connect with you if your heart is passionate. :)

Best to you,
Susanne
