We're Moved...
Aug. 7th, 2007 08:14 pm...BUT.
Ooooh, lemme tell ya, there's a few "buts" to this.
We're living just off of western North ave. Yeah, I know. We didn't have a choice..it was the only placethatgot back to us in time, other than this total hole that was advertised as Washington Village...turned out to be in Pigtown. I was afraid I was going to fall through the floors stepping on them. There were dead mice just sitting around in traps (The owner said that mice aren't a problem there, and in the same breath was talking about sometimes catching three or four mice at a time) I was afraid to breathe the air in this place...
So we wound up on Payson street. The Block itself, and the immediately surrounding blocks are quite nice....minimal trash, decently-kept properties, all that rot. But go more than one block in any direction and...yeah, it's not too pleasant.
The house would be nice...it's nowhere near the size of the previous place, but it's more than adequate. Hardwood floors downstairs, brand new carpet upstairs. Kitchen has tons of cabinets. The upstairs bathroom, unfortunately, looks like a baby shower puked- it's all blue and this sicky stale bubblegum-pink color.
Wish that were the worst of it.
We have a bedroom door whose knob frequently won't turn, and therefore the door will not open without a lot of force..that's okay though, we're not sleeping in the bedrooms, we're sleeping downstairs where the air conditioner is. There's no AC upstairs...but we've been offered a couple of window units from Kelly. Problem with that is that we're afraid to plug anything in. One morning we had the air conditioner going- that was it, nothing else turned on- plugged in the coffee pot and the circuit blew. This is how we found out that our breaker box is unlabeled. So we had to go through the mess of figuring out which breaker it was. This happened several times, and on Saturday we discovered that there was water laying on the basement floor...this wasn't there before. At the time, it was just little bits here and there, like someone had spilled a bit from a glass here and there. Despite calling and paging, I wasn't able to get ahold of anyone with the management company til yesterday. Said they never had a problem with water in the basement before (Though, now that I think of it, looking at the way the floor tiles were warped makes that very hard to believe) and that he would try to have someone come and check it out today. I also told him about the electrical issues, he said he'd call an electrician to look at it, and nonchalantly mentioned that it's possible that everything is hooked up to just a few circuits. Like that's not a problem or anything...My mom finds it very suspicious that the breaker box is unlabeled.
So today...no one came. I went downstairs in search of a particular box and found that there was far more water than before- my foot was half submersed in some places when I stepped...and it seems that the water is coming in through the floor. We're going to get the stuff down there upstairs as quickly as possible but as it is, nothing is in immediate danger.
I called yesterday to inquire about the inspection history of the place..the person I needed to talk to was out, so they gave me her hours for today...of course, I forgot to call til after the office was closed so I'll have to try tomorrow.
If we can't get things resolved reasonably quickly, we're going to be looking to get out of this lease, and are doing minimal unpacking for the moment. I will not deal with circuits constantly blowing, and water in my basement which can lead to mold, which can lead to all sorts of other issues including health problems.
I'm not dealing with it.
