They're producing a series of movies from Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising books. I've hoped for years that this would happen.

I may have to cry...the main character, an 11-year-old English boy is being changed to a 13-year-old American boy they're going to add VIKINGS, and a scene in a freakin' shopping mall, make one of his brothers into a possible Judas-type figure...apparently, from what I'm reading, the movie doesn't really resemble the books at all, and major folks involved in the production never even read the books.

This is utterly depressing. I always thought that The Dark Is rising, The Grey King and Silver On The Tree would make awesome movies (Over Sea Under Stone and Greenwitch would be good, but these two books aren't as good as the other three...Especially Silver On The Tree.)

See, this is why I prefer to see the movie before reading the book. It means I can enjoy the movie on its own merits, rather than seeth about what they changed.

Meh, sometimes that doesn't work out. I know of two movies that I saw before reading the book where I hated the book and loved the movie- and yes, in both cases the movie was based on the book.

But in this case, I first read the books almost 20 years ago...

All I really need to make a good movie is Christopher Eccleston . . Oh, wait! Hooray!

Yep. When I heard they had left out all of the Arthurian mythos I knew it was going to be a loss. Sounds like all that it's going to be is the title without any of the substance.

Sort of the same kind of disaster they did with Andre Norton's "Beast Master" and Heinlein's "Starship Troopers."

I know, it makes me want to cry too. If they're going to screw up the story that much, why not just write an original screenplay for once and stop messing with the classics?!

I don't really see how you can have that story not take place in Wales, that's sort of the whole point. Sheesh. I'm just going to close my eyes and pretend it doesn't exist.

I wonder what Susan Cooper thinks of all of this.
