One Abbreviation, Two Meanings...

What does it stand for?
Dedicants Program, right? Right.
Well unbeknownst to just about all of you, it also has another meaning for me. One that I forgot for quite a while...until today.
So earlier, I was talking to
Flaming DP. I dunno why I suddenly remembered it and was typing, but there it was, and it took me a second to remember WTF "flaming" was doing in front of DP.
For practically everyone who sees this, "Flaming DP" is a beverage that was (is?) popular with folks in my chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. Basically, it involved amaretto, cheap beer and just enough 151 to light things on fire...apparently it tastes like Dr Pepper when properly executed. I don't like Dr Pepper or amaretto. At the time, I just really disliked beer, didn't realize I was allergic (or hadn't yet developed the allergy actually) so I never had one.
But then the next thing that came to mind...yes, Stell, I still remember this, was the roll call from the Section 41 conference the semester I pledged....to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies theme...
Come and listen to a story 'bout a chapter named AO
We're the first in Texas don't listen to Alpha Rho
We belong to region seven and section 41
So we figured here at Austin was the place to have some fun.
College that is, at this here conference.
Here are some of our pledges and they are very smart
Listen to these things that they know by heart
AO rules the world and that's all you need to know
And now that we've told you, maybe we should go
Back to SMU for a Flaming DP! (Wha!)

Date: 2007-10-29 09:33 pm (UTC)Back in my day (well, the part that didn't overlap with your day :)) we did a roll call at the Phoenix Nationals in 1996, sung to the tune of "Piano Man":
(To the tune of the chorus)
Sing us a song, we're Alpha Omicron
Sing us a song tonight
We've come all the way from Dallas
Without any sleep last night
(To the tune of the "la la la" bridge)
We are the first in Texas
Don't listen to Alpha Rho
They lie ... (and then we screamed "Like a DOG!")
(To the tune of the chorus)
Sing us a song, we're Alpha Omicron
Sing us a song tonight
We got almost 2,000 hours
With just 30 pledges, WOO HOO!
There might have been another verse, but I don't remember. Probably because I was drunk. ;)
Another bit of Flaming DP-related chapter lore: at banquet my pledge semester (Spring 1996), I was bequeathed the Special Flamemeister Sunglasses by Tanya Laninga, the graduating chapter president, in her senior will. This granted me the official responsibility of concocting Flaming DPs at all unofficial events, including at conferences and conventions. The main duty was to make sure they were made correctly, and to make sure people gave the correct response to the question. (Also, I was to make sure people didn't pour the flaming shot into the glass instead of dropping it in, even though there were plenty of morons who did anyway.) Ironically, I have never ingested a Flaming DP in my life. :)

Date: 2007-10-30 01:53 am (UTC)I am pretty sure that you probably could....each chapter sets its own pledge requirements within certain parameters, so you might want to talk to them directly...but unless the maximum parameters have changed, knowing what they are...you might have a bit of a squeeze with as busy as you are, but it shouldn't be downright impossible (and sometimes, depending on the chapter and who's running the pledge program at the time, they can work with you if other activities make it really prohibitive.)
But yeah, I think you could. Heck, some of the grove's activities might even count as some of the service requirement.
