So if I'm looking at moving clear across the country in about a year, I'm thinking I should probably start thinking about getting a drivers license.

Question is...where am i going to find someone who is over the age of 21, who has held a full license for at least three years to log 60 hours of driving? Does it have to be 60 hours with the same person, or can multiple people do this? (The state required driving instruction doesn't count for any of that does it?)

*sigh*

Are you made to log this and turn in the log when you take your road test? If not, use it as a guideline. I probably had only 20 hours of wheel time plus driver ed in high school before I took my road test and passed with flying colors.

Alternatively, you may wish to wait till when you move if the requirements where you're moving are more lax.

In MD at least, it can be multiple people, but as the previous poster noted, you don't really have to do all 60 if you can find someone to . . . uh . . . sign off on your log. The MVA doesn't really check that carefully. And no, the driving instruction stuff doesn't count, although you can probably find someone to practice driving with through the school.

i thought all that logging shit was designed for 'underage' (teenage) drivers due to the high ratio of teenage accidents? are you sure that adults getting their licenses have to go through all that?

Frick. I was almost going to volunteer but I'm not 21 yet (won't be until July). I have had my license for 3 years though and I could attempt to help you out if need be. State required driving does not count under hours logged. When I went for my license I remember you also had to have driving in different conditions with those hours too (like rain, fog, etc.).

I'm going to try to solicit the advice of someone I know who, at least for a time within the last few years, was a Maryland driving instructor.

Yeah, I highly doubt someone your age ([livejournal.com profile] fuego) has to do this. I think this is only for teens. Look into it.

I talked to the MVA today. The requirements are the same for a permit no matter the age. The age difference mostly affects the provisional license- once the driving test is passed, the restrictions that would apply to someone under 18 would not apply to me, but I would still have to go 18months without a violation to officially have a "regular" license.

Well, I do have to have a permit for 6 months before I can take the test for the license.

Maryland doesn't allow that.

PA used to, dunno if they still do...but it doesn't matter, i haven't lived there for almost five years now.

Well then, Maryland is fucking dumb. I got my license in PA at age 22. All I had to do was pass the multiple guess exam to get my permit, practice as much as I felt necessary, then pass the test. The moment I got my license it was full.

Yeah, should have just gotten it in PA while I was there...lol...actually, I was going to get it in Texas (I was told that it was ridiculously easy to get your license in texas if you were 18 or older) but never got to do it before I left.
