Nov. 19th, 2008 08:09 pmI think I've decided that I'm happy I don't live here. just the small experience I've had with walking anywhere has already driven me nuts. I would either need a car or have to take public transportation to go more than a few blocks without fear of getting run over.
What is it with the traffic lights? Or, more specifically, the walk lights? Or lack thereof, I really should say. So far I've seen precisely one switch to the walk signal. And it was like that for roughly two seconds before switching to the flashing hand signal, and the light had turned by the time my foot hit the opposite curb- and I was running, not walking. That's just not reasonable.
And the cars almost never seem to stop uniformly. The roads are like six-lane highways, one lane will stop and five will go, then two other lanes stop and the rest go, then all of them stop at once for about half a second, but then three more are going right away.
There are crosswalks. There are walk lights. But it's an absolute pedestrian hazard. don't geven get me started on the four-lane off-ramp that I had to cross to go anywhere besides restaurants, the training center and back.
Today during the lunch break, Scott, who was one of the managers that had come to Hunt Valley to train the night people back when I started, took me and Fulgence back around his part of the office, I got to meet just about everyone that I talk to on a regualr basis- I'm also in class with a bunch of them who are going for a renewal on their CVE. Tomorrow, I get to see the other departments housed here. They're having some special "customer appreciation" thing this week, and they had a pot luck lunch today, which we were invited to join. People brought in some really good stuff...sushi, baklava, brownies, home made beef burritos, barbequeue, grilled chicken, cookies, some Vietnamese beef and tomato dish...no, I didn't try some of everything. Oh, and there's a big lunch on Friday too.
Sadly, today marks the end of the nice warm weather we've had this week. It's only supposed to be in the 30's tomorrow. It was about 80 yesterday.
The other thing that's getting to me is the dry weather. The some thign happened to me when I had first moved to Texas...I can't drink enough wayer. I swear I drank six bottles today. I'm going through lip balm like there's no tomorrow- picked some other stuff up that's got jojoba, vitamin e and some other stuff hopefully that seems to be helping a little more than the lip balm. My skin is much dryer than normal. Oh yeah, and I've had a few (very minor) nosebleeds since I've been here, and had a sore throat for the first two days. it took me about two months for all that to finally go away in Texas...this time, I'll only have to put up with it til Friday.
