1. What is the maximum number of any given item that you can shake a stick at?

2. Maids a-milking, ladies dancing, drummers drumming...these all make sense. but is a-leaping really common practice among lords? Or was this a special occasion?

3. The perennial...why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

4. What exactly do computers do when they crash? Every time I hear "My computer crashed", I desperately want to say "Sorry, we don't cover accidental damage."

wow

4) There are a few possibilities...
For example, a hard drive (like those in the ipod) can experience a "head crash", wherein the reader/control arm physically crashes into the disk, casuing a fun noise and making the disk mostly unusable.

This could also be caused by a cable moving in the computer somewhere and crasking into a critical fan, like the CPU fan or the Power Supply vent, which can cause an electrical short or at the very least a critical overheat, which will cause the computer to lock up.

It could also be describing the actions taken by many popular personal operating systems, which allow a single process to use 100% of the processor time and fill 100% of the availible RAM. This effectively can force out all the other processes, which will queue up, which will eventually conflict with one another as they keep requesting the same resource over and over, logically crashing into eachother.

3) You obviously haven't been on the Jersey Parkway. We do park on there, and swear at other drivers.

2) See: Office Space. "Jump to Conclusions". We were attacked. The attackers were Arab. Bad people want to use bigger weapons then the ones we sold them in the 80's. Saddam is an Arab, and is bad. Therefore, Saddam wants Weapons of Mass Destruction.

1) I would imagine infinite items, except yourself, unless you point the stick at yourself.

3. Cecil Adams actually answered this one a while back. The main purpose of a driveway is to drive from the road to the house; parking is incidental to the purpose of a driveway. The main reason people tend to park on driveways is because there is no where else to park at most residences today. In city lots, driveways tend to be short as well, so it looks almost like an off-street place to park, but that's not its intended function. At my house, I rarely park in the driveway, but rather in a parking space behind the house, accessible via the driveway. If I parked in the driveway, I'd block our other car, which is parked in the garage (also not on the driveway).

As for parkways.... The easiest way to explain it is to recall that the noun "park" refers to an area set aside for other purposes, usually allowed to remain in a natural state while the rest of the surrounding area is used for other purposes. In the northeast, at least, a "parkway" tends to refer to a limited access highway surrounded by trees or other greenery that is also restricted to passenger vehicles (as opposed to trucks or tractor/trailer rigs). As such, it's effectively a "way" though a "park".

Deep Thoughts...

Well, I've already answered that one. Next...

Re: #2
No idea. I would've written "lords a-lording" if it were up to me. Next...

Re: #3
I agree with the explanations [livejournal.com profile] blaisepascal wrote. Next...

Re: #4
If you want to be wittier and easier to understand, you could instead say: "Sorry, we don't cover collision damage."
