This won't be my DP Nature Awareness assignment, but I was just thinking of 2 weekends ago, at our DP meeting at the Grove how a bunch of us were talking about different moments of some sort of awe-inspiring manifestations of nature.

I just thought I'd share a few "You just haven't lived until you've seen..." moments

...like the time when Playa Del Fuego was held over the same weekend as a full moon, and as [livejournal.com profile] aikinut and I were making our way through rural Delaware close to the burn sight, we could see the first fireflies of the year, and the full moon on a cloudless night...and moon rays.Id never seen moon rays before, don't think I have since. Or is this what people mean when they say moonbeams? And then much later that night I couldn't sleep, so I crawled out of my tent and went to walk around. It was getting close to dawn- the sky had the faintest slivers of lightening on the horizon and the place was nearly silent and very still. the lower part of the grounds, just past the shaow ditch were stil rough field so nothing was out there and it was misty and everything looked blue. I was barefoot and crickets were chirping everywhere. I just wanted to walk out into it and see what was there. I felt like I was in a dream. The moon was getting low and there was a small camp that had just gotten in and set up camp on this edge of the grounds, they were griling hot dogs and it was semi-light by then. The sky was purple turning to lavender and the moon was turning first orange, and then deep red as it hung low and huge on the horizon. I sat with them and watched it til it started to dip below the hills in the distance, and then I climbed up on top of a pile of cinderblocks and stood there until the last sliver of the edge was gone.

...or the sun setting behind the Matterhorn

...or the old house that we lived in when I was in junior high...It was just outside of the edge of Lancastr though yud never know it. It was in a neighborhod off of a major home, but it might as well been the middle of nowhere, it was that quiet. There was a hil down to the house and another hill in the backyard that led to a wide creek. There were no streetlights. In the summertime, I would go and sit at the edge of the creek and watch the fireflies...probably hundreds of thousands of hem flying over the creek in a little light show, and reflecting off the water. I really miss that. We also think we had a firefy nest somewhere in the house...never did figure out where it was but all sumer, each summer we were there, there were fireflies all over the house every night.

...or the sidewalk full of irises at the Mint Chocolate Chip House (The house I moved out of when I moved to Baltimore) They were there every spring, and they only lasted a short time...but I loved them. I don't miss much about the house, but I miss the irises. Bronze irises are my favorite flower.

...or the first night that I lived in Texas. The sun had just set, and the sky was stil pink and orange and purple and bue, and from where I was at the time I had a perfect view of the Dalas skyline all lit up and sparkly...and there was an electrical strm. No thunder to be heard, no rain. Just hundreds of lightning bolts rolling and branching and forking across the sky. I've never seen anyhting like it before or since. That was when I knew that I had left the nightmare of my senior year of high school behind, I was away from my family and everything I had left in PA and that I was going to be okay.

...or the time during the last spring I lived in PA...we had a massive thunderstorm in th late afternon that was so violent that I didn't go outside (I frequently go outside during storms). when the worst had passed, I went outside and watched the last of it as it passed. And then I watched as the clouds broke but never went away fully. There were clouds all over the sky bt not completely covering it and it was the time of late afternoon when the sun is intensely bright and gold...the sky was pale buish-wite, the clouds were deep blue-violet, glowing gold where the sun hit them... and the air was pink. You know what I mean if you've ever seen it. And there was a rainbow in the sky...a full, deep rainbow- one which I could see both ends of. And another one apeared as we, but it arced across the sky horizntaly- in other words it was in the sky like a horseshoe laid flat, if that makes sense? Both rainbows just grew in intensity...and then faded out...and then came back again several times. It literally lasted over an hour- I knew this because my stepfather was watching an hour-long TV show that had just started when I went outside and it had been over for a while when I came back in.

unrelated comment: [livejournal.com profile] seaya tells me that you worked at the Rite Aid on Paradise and Frederick. I'm thinking of applying to work there, but she indicates that the life and times at the place weren't so hot.

Chat on Aim sometime?

i also wrked at the one on westland. that's actually where i had issues. but the person that caused such issues left shortly after I did.

the one at paradise and frederick was great- everyone there was really nice and they were really relaxed about most things. only problem is that they only paid like $6 an hour- that was over 2 years ago, it's probably gone up somewhat since than but i have no idea.

I'm on AIM in the evenings mostly. I'm also signed on most of the time via my cell phone- if you im me and I don't respond, it's probably because of that. the name if you don't have it is fuego4496

thanks. actualy, it was your writing about that labyrinth that got me started on this.

so, if i may ask, I'm curious...was it true? (for the record, i think it was. or maybe i just hope it was, it was so beautiful)

If you believe it was true, then yes, it is. Especially if it inspired you. Just as the conversation at the top of that entry was true because it inspired me.

But I will state for the record that I was indeed at the arboretum that night, and I was in that class that day, and I went to the arboretum with that intent. The details, well, I don't think that their reality is so important, but to my recollection, they are all true.
