So...here's the situation:

I have a computer with a 4-gig HD, and one with a 20-gig HD. Naturally, I want to make use of the 20, right? Right.

But the problem is that the 20 doesn't have an ethernet port.

For the sake of storing some stuff on the 20, I can do this:

Upload files that I want to store to some sort of internet storage place, pull my computer and steph and jesse's of the innernets and hook that computer up by USB and download.

Can anyone think of a more efficient way of handling this without purchasing any new hardware? I can't. This would be a temporary arrangement, til early next week at the latest. Then I can just purchase a usb-ethernet adapter and a router.

Are these laptops? ISA and PCI ethernet cards are cheap as sin.

oh, and the desktop machine won't take an ethernet card- it's custom built in a really small case. already tried that.

Are these macs? How old are they?

Some of the macs will auto-sense a straight vs. crossover ethernet cable. Which means you can connect the two machines back-to-back with an ethernet cable, when you want to do your file transfers.

Another option, if you have a firewire cable. Boot one of the machines in firewire target mode. Connect the firewire cable between the machines. The hard drive on the machine that is in target mode will appear as a firewire drive on the other machine.

Okay, stupid PC's. My last suggestion, besides ditching the machine w/ no ethernet card. USB keychain drive. Do you or one of your housemates have one kicking around? How about a digital camera with a storage card and a USB cable? If you have one of those, you can usually treat them as a really big USB keychain drive.

yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

no, don't have any of those. I'll just go with my original plan. Once I get the stuff mved over, I'll be fine.
thanks for trying though

You can move the 20 gig hard drive into the more useful machine. Maybe.

two different types of connections, can't do that. basically, i have to keep the hardware within the respective cases.

why not put the 20 gig into the 4 gig machine?

What are the two different connections?

IDE

Hmmmm...options, potions, incantations

ummm...there's not a lot...there are USB network adapters that shouldn't be more than 20 bucks, maybe.

yeah...what you said.

i don't have any extra money, at all til next week. hence the temporary arrangement til i can grab one.

i figured i had already come up with the best idea that's actually possible for what i have to work with, but you never know.
