Currently watching the Tim Burton Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.

Never had an interest of seeing it, but [livejournal.com profile] chironcentaur flipped it on and I was sitting nearby.

I can't remember the last movie that I laughed so much at. I might actually consider buying it.

Johnny Depp's delivery of dialog is absolutely genius. It doesn't hurt that his dialog is a riot to begin with.

Nobody can outdo Gene Wilder. Nobody.

I can't stand the original movie, so from where I'm looking, ANYONE can outdo Gene Wilder on that one.

I feel sad for you not being able to appreciate the original. =(

Maybe it'd help if you watch it again, but mute the oompa-loompa song bits.

As much as I love Johnny Depp, I gotta say that it's not "Willy Wonka" without the Oompa Loompa song.

See, that's a huge chunk of the reason that I can't stand the original movie.

The original was a 1971 Kids' Classic. The era was ... well ... maximum strength dorky. However, I could live without the Oompa Loompa Song as it went. The new songs, by way of Tim Burton's fave musical muse, Danny Elfman, are much better. That said, as a child born in the 1970s, I watched the original several times and enjoyed it immensely. But the new one is a tip of the hat to the kids who watched the original, but are now parents themselves. It's somewhat more accurate to the story, in certain ways, as well, though both take liberties with the story. Six degrees of Charlie: Peter Ostrum, the original Charlie, became a Veterinarian in Lowville, NY, and while normally a large animal vet, he rescued a local beagle, which my in-laws adopted. Dr. Ostrum is quite successful in the North Country. Glad to see there's a child star who could move on.
