When people talk about time in terms of "standard" time when "standard" versus "daylight" are irrelevant.

Every single one of my coworkers does this when giving business hours for my tech support department. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. "Our hours are eight a.m. to eight p.m. eastern standard time."

Hell-lo, business hours do not change when daylight savings time kicks in.

And hey, no one ever says "Our hours are eight a.m. to eight p.m. eastern daylight time" when daylight savings time is in effect. So....why????????

Just knock it the fuck off and say "eight a.m. to eight p.m. eastern time" already."

but, if you live in Hawaii or Arizona and are calling in, the times DO change...from 8-8 to 9-9. :)

'course, i don't know what kinds of people call in there anymore, so i can't say if folks from AZ are a valid concern.

Actually, no they don't. Well, the eastern time doesn't change anyway.

8am-8pm eastern time is always 8am-8pm eastern time. Whereas in any other part of the mountain time zone, you could just say 6am-6pm mountain time and it will never change, in Arizona, that will be either 6am-6pm or 5am-5pm depending on the time of year. But we always give the business hours here in terms of eastern time. That doesn't change.

*nod* just saying, if you're in either of those states, hours elsewhere DO change...because neither Hawaii nor Arizona follow Daylight Savings.

then again, if an individual lives in either of those states and doesn't know the rest of the country changes while they don't, then i can't say they're the most intelligent of beings.

i don't know if i'm actually saying what i mean at the moment...might try this later when i'm more coherent.

No...I know what you mean, and I think I worded what I was saying badly too. The main thing I was trying to say was that 8am-8pm eastern time is always 8am to 8pm eastern time, no matter if it's daylight savings time or not and in Arizona, that's 6am-6pm part of the year, 5am-5pm the other part of the year. It's either two hours behind or three, but the eastern time doesn't change.

Uhg...hope that makes sense now

yes. i think we're both trying to say the same thing and coming at it from different angles. :)

I used to say EST when I was a customer service rep. It was just something that was said. I suppose eastern time is said faster ^^

Yeh, if it doesn't actually change, it's stupid to mention that. When I worked in a call centre, I'd say "eastern time." In fact, it was more specific than that. It was 9am-9pm for EVERY timezone (our call centre ran long hours and different shifts to accompany that requirement). So at 9:01pm, we'd be inaccessible for people living in the Eastern timezone, for example.

Now, if you have customers where that WILL change things, that would be important to note.

I think most people don't even realise what it means these days. I was one of them until reading this entry. Everyone says that. I just thought it was a way to differentiate between the various time zones. Just curious why it pisses you off so much.

I dunno. There are random little things that irritate the hell out of me for no real good reason that I can think of. That's why I generally bitch about them on LJ instead of at people's faces.

Hey, may I burden you with a tech support type question? We don't know how to resolve this, and I don't know who else to ask. My laptop is running Windows 2000 and we have a wireless network. Well, it had Windows updates and a Java runtime update tonight, so I installed them and restarted. Now it won't connect to the internet. When I go through the manual connect to the router, and it gets the IP address, it's showing a completely incorrect IP address. (My desktop is showing the right one, and connects just fine.) Can you think of anything to try? It's deadline night, and the desktop is painful to my back to use for long periods of time-- I'm borrowing his laptop for now, but I'm at wits' end with this.

Sorry to bug you, and thanks for any advice you can offer.
