So last night, I was at the grocery store, just before they closed. Standing in line, I watched as two overly-made-up, spoiled, self-absorbed princess types sauntered in. The cashier informed them that the store was closing in five minutes and they gave a dismissive "yeah, whatever" sort of response as they walked by. Apparently, they were only grabbing one or two things and came back and got in line immediately behind me. The entire time, they were talking. Loudly. Very loudly. Roughly six inches from my ear. After about five seconds, I got sick of it and moved as far away as I could get without losing my place in line. The following ensued:
Princess one: "Blah blah blah blah, hey, she just moved away from us. What do you think her problem is?"
Princess two: turns around to see that I am no longer mere inches from her, then asks me "Hey, what's your problem?"
Me (wasn't going to say anything, because you know, there's just no point): "Well, since you asked, you're less than a foot from me and screaming in my ear."
Princess two gives a little gasp of disbelief "What? Did you just say that? Did you just have the nerve to tell me to shut up?" (turns to P1) "She had the nerve to tell me to shut up!"
Me: (cant remember what I said anymore, but it was something to do with reiterating the fact that she was shouting in my ear)
P2: "Well...did you know you're really ugly?" *turns back to P1* "I just can't believe she said that! We're going to have to tell everyone that an ugly chick told us to shut up. They won't believe it either!"
(I bet there was a twitter thread going on somewhere about me last night and how I had the nerve to say that Princess needed to shut up- OMG can you believe it, she's like so below me and stuff because she's uglier than me!)
Gawd...you know someone really doesn't have anything of substance to say when all they can come back with is "you're ugly!" but what irritates me even more is the idea that some people assume that they're just so privileged and have the right to be assholes because they think they're prettier than everyone else. Seriously. My not meeting your standards of beauty is completely irrelevant to you being unable to control your gaping yap.
Get the volume control fixed already you little twit. And get the fuck over your spoiled, inconsiderate self.

Abstract Curiosity
Date: 2010-03-20 09:12 pm (UTC)Or maybe being around noisy, annoying people is just the side-effect of being in a crowded community, using public transportation, etc- I dunno. Not that these factors would in the least excuse them from being so rude and inconsiderate toward you, of course.
Re: Abstract Curiosity
Date: 2010-03-21 03:21 am (UTC)I also have never had the same sort of ongoing problems anywhere else I've ever been. It's a rare occasion that I can leave the apartment here and not encounter loud, screaming people. (But then, sometimes we don't even have to leave- the obnoxiousness comes to us- there are times when I've heard people screaming regular conversations from at least half a block away- or at least I have to guess it's that far seeing as that's about how far I can see out my windows and if there's no one visible in that distance...) In recent months, I've been to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've ridden public transportation there and been in close proximity to more people than I'd like to think of. Of course, there were other "too many people" issues in those places- like constantly getting practically run over by a horde of people who walk like a speeding bullet and don't care if they run into you and just keep going in Manhattan. I would far rather deal with tat than the screaming. I also used to spend significant chunks of time in Manhattan and Philadelphia, not to mention living in Dallas for two years- all cities that are quite significantly larger and more densely populated than Baltimore-and never ran into this, so it's not like I just had an isolated lucky incident.
I also know that it's not just my own sensitivities because I know other people who encounter the same sort of thing around here who also haven't seen it in other places.
I'm sure it's not *just* Baltimore, I'm sure that plenty of other places have equally obnoxious populations, I just haven't been there to witness it.
